NEW ALBERTA FEATURE: “Bow River, The INTERESTING TROUT”

Welcome! We’re excited to share this video as it presents a new opportunity and a new approach that can be applied to any larger river in your area when it’s running clear. We’re talking about larger rivers that you’ve primarily fished from a boat and spent little time walking the edges. This video was shot in late August and the Bow river is flowing between 80 – 100 cms (2800 – 3500 cfs). It’s clear enough to see 4 – 6 feet deep and it’s a bright sunny day with minimal smoke in the air.
The mantra the fly fishing world seems to follow when floating large rivers home to rainbows and browns is typically “streamers & foam for the river’s biggest fish; deep nymphing for the most fish… pound it out and just catch something, as many as you can”. Catch the most, then the biggest. Rarely is focus given to “was I engaged with interesting trout all day?”
Well… this is the video that answers that question and looks at what day on Alberta’s Bow River looks like when you break it down and specifically hunt trout, looking for the interesting & engaging fish. We were on the water 10 or 11 hrs and I don’t think we spent 10 minutes without visually engaging a trout.
