NEW FEATURE VIDEO: “Choosing to CHANGE LUCK – Dave’s EPIC DAY”

There is a lot of great information & updates in this share! Please be sure to read these producers’ notes regarding the background to this video. It’s unlike any other you’ve seen as Dave digs in to the fishing – not something he typically allows himself to do on camera. We give an update to the coming months’ videos and features. We then have a look at some environmental considerations from New Zealand, sharing how similar these are globally.
In the grand scheme of last year’s New Zealand trip, we experienced a parade of compounding impacts of weather, tourism, severe drought, angling densities and other impacts that precluded me from having a magical run of a day. Amelia had lucked into a couple 1/2 days but I’d hit more of a dedicated plod of fishing. Knowing the trip was in its last week, knowing I love this short reach of water and knowing the weather was going to shift massively and cause a short day, she wanted me to have a go and experience even a 1/2 day of magic before the trip wound down.
The title of this video is an odd one but you’ll quickly understand. I lose a few fish at the beginning of the video because I wasn’t all in, mentally “going”. At the end of 3 months of van camping, taking on the conditions that change every single day and trying to not just plan that day but try to set up in a region based on the projected weather forecast and its impact on stream flows and trout… isn’t easy. Life in a van for 3 months driving about based on those anticipated conditions, finding camp sites, food, water, access permission… wears you down. A couple sleeping on a double mattress equivalent based on two 3″ sleeping pads in the back of a van gets rough. Especially when trying to cook, clean, sleep in howling wind, driving rain, insane & prolonged heat. Add in changing regulations on camping and fishing, and societal attitudes in New Zealand regarding tourism and there’s added layers of stress in trying to have the best experience while doing our best to honor New Zealand’s ways and expectations of foreign tourist guests. And don’t forget that to be able to spend 3 months away annually, it takes nearly 2 months of dedicated work to pre-edit videos and see them through to scheduled launch before we travel to New Zealand. By the end of our time in New Zealand each year, the totality of 5 months compounds and we’re simply spent. This day comes at the end of that run. I was exhausted physically & mentally but knew I wanted to execute at a high level and chose to dig in, lean in to my foundations and have a solid go at this day, for as long as it would last. The concept of digging in and leaning in to fundamentals and foundations leading to improved luck is similar to a sports team that’s coming out of a losing streak; their play is improving but the results don’t come immediately. But when the ball starts to bounce with a little luck on their side because of improved play and commitment to process, it really goes well. The choice and result… one often begets the other.
